Captain Edward Smith of the Titanic

Captain Edward Smith of the Titanic

1911

Captain Smith was the most senior and experienced commanders in the White Star Line. His skills were widely known and respected in nautical circles. He has been unfairly blamed for going too fast or not posting enough lookouts. In fact he behaved magnificently throughout the disaster. His only fault may have been a tendency to handle the Titanic as if it were a smaller mail steamer, not a large passenger liner.
